Philosophy of Economics
Money as an Object of Philosophical Analysis
A crucial factor in the functioning of social production and the economic sphere is money, regarded as a distinct reality. Why is it considered "distinct"?
From the perspective of economic theory, money is a particular commodity, an equivalent in the exchange of goods, a form of the value of commodities, serving as a medium of exchange that facilitates trade.
However, the significance of money for humanity and its existential role are profoundly impactful. Consequently, the problem of understanding money extends far beyond the confines of economic science. Thus, a separate branch has emerged within the philosophy of economics—namely, the philosophy of money—which examines the influence of money and monetary relations on the worldview and value system of individuals and society.
Money has fundamentally transformed the very system of human values, emerging as a universal value. The monetarist worldview—the omnipotence of money—is acutely pronounced in contemporary postmodern society. Money demonstrates its ability to serve as a means of acquiring absolutely everything, including material possessions and spiritual values, such as fulfilling patriotic duties or affirming the professional integrity of politicians or doctors.
In the current monetarist-globalist era, the adage "money makes money" reflects a reality where monetary exchange disregards commodity ties and generates speculative "profits from thin air." In a broader philosophical context, this is perceived as an arbitrary liberation of the sign from its meaning.
Money serves as a source of freedom and a condition for personal self-realization. Without sufficient funds, an individual cannot fully enjoy the advantages of a rich social life that encompasses freedom of choice, creativity, and opportunities for personal fulfillment. Viewing a fulfilling human life—as attainable only in a truly democratic, lawful, and culturally mature society—as the norm reduces the function of money to its natural state, thus "normalizing" its impact on consciousness.
Money is a product of society, which bears the responsibility for its creation. Humanity must recognize the place and role of money in its life and learn to manage it effectively.
Therefore, money is a unique commodity that acts as a universal equivalent of measure; a measure of value and a medium of circulation; a complex socio-philosophical phenomenon that influences the motivations of human activity and value orientations.
