Philosophy of Religion
Definition
Religion is an inseparable element of human existence. There is no person in the world who has not asked themselves questions about religion. Some respond affirmatively, others negatively, but no one remains without an answer to this question. The study of past cultures reveals that there has never been a people or culture without religion. The study of religion is multifaceted, employing various methods and approaches. There are two primary disciplines dedicated to the study of religion: the philosophy of religion and the history of religions. Additionally, the psychology of religion, which examines the mental processes associated with religious experience; the sociology of religion, which explores the connection between religion and society; the ethnology of religion, which investigates the relationship between religion and the development of peoples; and the geography of religion, which maps the spread and changes of religions, also contribute valuable insights. Studies into the interplay between religion and economics, religion and politics, among others, provide intriguing results.
Among all the scientific or academic disciplines that study religion, defining the subject of the philosophy of religion is the most problematic. Since philosophy seeks to delineate the essence of everything, the philosophy of religion, as a branch of philosophy, aims to determine the essence of religion, that is, to answer the question of what religion is. This task is universally acknowledged in the philosophy of religion. The problem arises when a philosopher of religion attempts to define the essence of religion. For the vast majority of people who have lived and live on Earth, religion represents a mystical connection with God. Believers experience a profound encounter with a transcendent reality, and this encounter gives meaning to their entire existence. Understanding this encounter, the possibility of a connection between humanity and God, and the ability of humans to grasp God, is the subject of the philosophy of religion.
In the European intellectual tradition, there are two evident ways of knowing God. People can know God based on what God has revealed about Himself, a method known as theology. People can also know God through their own reasoning, and this method is referred to as the philosophy of religion. There are several differences between theology and the philosophy of religion. Firstly, theology is closely tied to specific religions and denominations. For instance, there is Christian theology, Jewish theology, and Islamic theology, but there is no non-denominational theology. Secondly, theology is based on revelation as found in sacred scriptures or mystical experiences of religious leaders, whereas the philosophy of religion relies on reason. Since all people think within common cognitive categories, the philosophy of religion is universal.
Traditional in the philosophy of religion are attempts to answer questions about the existence of God and to outline what God is like. These questions have preoccupied religious scholars for centuries, and today they continue to fill curricula in the field of philosophy of religion at Western universities. In the Middle Ages, several rational arguments in favor of religious faith were formulated. These arguments are such significant achievements of philosophical thought that they continue to be discussed in textbooks on the philosophy of religion written in English, German, French, and other languages.
