Logic: Laws and Forms of Correct Thinking

Logic as the Science of Laws and Forms of Correct Thinking

The highest form of human cognitive activity is thinking, which, in contrast to the immediate means of reflecting reality (sensation, perception, imagination), grasps reality indirectly and in a generalized manner. Through thinking, we come to understand aspects of the real world that cannot be revealed solely through sensory forms of knowledge; for instance, all scientific laws are the result of mental activity. Knowledge concerning the underlying properties of natural phenomena and the laws to which they are subject is inherently deductive, meaning it is acquired through logical reasoning. Logic examines the laws and forms of correct thinking, systematically organizing valid modes of judgment that ensure true conclusions can always be derived from true premises. Understanding the laws of formal logic is beneficial for the practice of human thought, regardless of one’s professional background. However, it holds particular significance in scientific endeavors: the study of logic lays the essential groundwork for fruitful engagement in science.
