The Main Spheres of Social Life: The Spiritual Sphere of Society
Social Consciousness and its Structure
The Essence of The Concept of “Social Consciousness”
Defining the essence of social consciousness necessitates an exploration of its bearer, leading us to the question of the relationship between individual and collective consciousness. Since social consciousness is a phenomenon conditioned not only by the mechanisms of its emergence and evolution but also by the nature of its existence and historical mission, it must be considered an attribute of society. It represents a distinct type of reality that can be correlated with the existence of society itself. Social consciousness exists within the framework of "individual — activity — communication — society — history — language — culture," all of which are in a dynamic state of development and functioning, continually engaging new generations with the treasures of history. The individual’s mind cannot think outside the realms of humanity, history, and society. Indeed, human awareness of the world unfolds within the context of social life, with ideas emerging in individual consciousness articulated through communication and inscribed in language, thus elevating individual consciousness to the level of social existence. An individual’s consciousness is born and dies with them; however, within the system of society, it acquires a kind of immortality, becoming a part of the collective spiritual culture of that society. The level of development of this spiritual culture, in turn, forms the foundation for each individual consciousness.
This indicates a complex, dialectical relationship between individual and social consciousness. While social consciousness is supra-personal, it is not devoid of personal essence. Moreover, social consciousness is not merely a quantitative sum of individual consciousnesses; it constitutes a qualitatively new entity. Internally, it represents a particularly organized ideal-objective reality, with demands and wills that individuals must heed, just as they heed natural phenomena. Simultaneously, social consciousness does not exist for the individual as an external fatal force that completely subjugates individual consciousness; on the contrary, each individual confronts it, and yet each absorbs this force differently, reacting uniquely according to their personal characteristics and, in turn, influencing social consciousness variably. Each individual consciousness also possesses its own sources of development; thus, every person, despite existing within a shared human culture, remains unique.
Consciousness cannot be reduced solely to its personal form of existence. The bearers of social consciousness include not only individuals but also social groups and society as a whole. With its objective nature and internal laws of development, social consciousness can lag behind or anticipate existence within the evolutionary process that is characteristic of a given society. In this respect, social consciousness may play the role of an active catalyst for social progress or serve as a mechanism for its stagnation; the transformative power of social consciousness is capable of influencing the entirety of existence.
Social consciousness is an extraordinarily complex phenomenon, possessing a dynamic and intricate structure conditioned by the structure of social existence. Within the structure of social consciousness, regarded as a certain wholeness, various levels and forms are distinguished, which are closely interrelated.
