The Humanistic Character of Renaissance Philosophy
The philosophy of the Renaissance holds a significant place in the history of thought, marking a period when new worldviews and methodological approaches emerged, transforming perceptions of humanity and its role in the cosmos while laying the groundwork for modern science and the secularization of public life.
The onset of the Renaissance was influenced by numerous factors, primarily social and economic transformations that heralded the rise of industrial economic relations. Yet, this alone is insufficient to explain its emergence; the invention of gunpowder and major geographical discoveries stimulated an interest in science as a vital tool for addressing practical challenges. Furthermore, by the fifteenth century, many original works of ancient philosophy and culture were rediscovered in Europe. Figures of the Italian Renaissance were acquainted not only with Aristotle, often associated with scholasticism, but also with Plato, Democritus, and other authorities of Greek thought. This confluence of factors catalyzed the profound shift in understanding that we associate with the Renaissance.
Renaissance philosophy can be divided into two stages: the early phase, associated with Italian cultural figures of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, which is marked by a distinctly humanistic orientation; and the later phase, encompassing the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, when this new worldview spread beyond Italy to other European countries and was characterized by a growing emphasis on the natural sciences. This division, however, is relative, as the humanistic and scientific lines often intersect and complement one another.
Francesco Petrarch (1304-1374), Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375), Lorenzo Valla (1407-1457), Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494), and Pietro Pomponazzi (1462-1524) are just a few notable Italian humanist thinkers who, in their works, sought to dismantle the abstract scholasticism that defined previous eras and the conception of man as an ascetic preoccupied solely with the afterlife. They celebrated earthly life, human love, and engagement in the world, expressing a deep appreciation for nature and homeland while critiquing the corrupt and deceitful clergy. Their ideal was the well-rounded individual, epitomized in Pico della Mirandola's "Oration on the Dignity of Man," where God, in creating humanity, proclaims to Adam: “We give you, O Adam, neither a fixed place, nor a specific form, nor a particular duty, so that you may determine your own place, form, and duty according to your own desires and decisions. The forms of other creatures are fixed within the confines of our laws, but you, unconfined, shape your own image as you see fit.” This represents a new hymn to humanity, distinct from both medieval and ancient conceptions, even as the Renaissance is seen as a revival of antiquity. In antiquity, humanity was perceived as a natural being, a fragment of the cosmos, with happiness tied to the understanding of this essence. Medieval philosophy, while granting freedom of will, viewed human activity through the lens of prayer, religious ritual, and the comprehension of sacred texts. In contrast, the Renaissance celebrated humanity as an active creator, likening human endeavor to divine creativity. Humans do not merely seek to emulate God; they, like God, shape the world according to their own ideals.
This new perspective on humanity also engendered a transformed understanding of science. The view of science as abstract speculation was overcome, blurring the lines between scientific inquiry and practical activity, paving the way for experimental natural philosophy.
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543), Galileo (1564-1642), and Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) laid the foundations of experimental mathematical science. Here, nature and humanity, as its part, became the focus of scientific inquiry, unencumbered by religious interference. Undoubtedly, ancient Greek theories, particularly Democritus's atomism and the mathematical philosophies of Pythagoras and Plato, influenced this new science. However, this natural philosophy broke away from the contemplative stance of antiquity, emphasizing experience, experimentation, and the study of specific natural phenomena. Galileo, for instance, challenged Aristotle's explanation of falling bodies, demonstrating through experimentation that in a vacuum, all bodies fall at the same rate.
The revolutionary impact of Copernicus's teachings cannot be overstated. The transition from a geocentric to a heliocentric model redefined humanity's position, displacing both Earth and humankind from the center of the universe and expanding its boundaries to infinity. This new worldview not only diminished the status of humanity as a unique creation of God but also equated Earth with the celestial spheres, thereby opening new possibilities for human endeavor.
The Renaissance also heralded a novel understanding of public life, closely linked to the scientific pursuits of Italian thinker Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527). In his works, "The Prince" and "Discourses on the First Decade of Titus Livius," Machiavelli articulated a new perspective on politics and power, severing the traditional connection between politics and morality that dates back to antiquity. He posited that the primary aim of politics is to acquire and maintain power, relegating morality and religion to mere tools in this pursuit. In doing so, he paved the way for a pragmatic understanding of politics and its role in societal life.
